OverDrive and iOS - Another Update

Earlier this week, OverDrive released an update for the OverDrive App for iOS devices.

UPDATE 3/6/2016: We've released an update for OverDrive for iOS (3.5.2), which includes updated error messages and some individual eBook fixes (which should reduce the number of "Fulfillment Failed" errors), and also addresses the issue of library cards not being remembered. If you're experiencing any of the issues mentioned in this article, please update to the latest version of the app and try again before using the steps below. http://help.overdrive.com/customer/portal/articles/2323453

For patrons that continue to have problems downloading titles, OverDrive recommends the following:

  1. Uninstall the app
  2. Reboot the device (that step is very important)
  3. Reinstall the app from the app store.

Rebooting the device after uninstalling and before reinstalling seems to be critical in some cases for resolving issues. Instruction for uninstalling the OverDrive app are here: http://help.overdrive.com/customer/portal/articles/1481109 beginning with step 4.

InfoSoup Logout Link

Based on some discussion with the Encore advisory group, I have made a small change on the InfoSoup home page to make the "You are logged into your account" message and Logout link stand out more. The display will also match more closely the Encore display, where the logout link displays next to the users name. You can see a screen shot at https://owlsnet.org/sites/default/files/network-news/logout.gif

The first time InfoSoup displays, the new link may appear out of place. Searching or refreshing the browser will load the new files and the message and logout link should display correctly. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks,

Evan

Update for OverDrive App problem for iPad/iPhone

I just got some additional information from OverDrive. They have posted a couple updated, and easier to follow help articles:

They also said they made a change last night that will hopefully simplify the process for fixing these issues – you don’t need to know what authorization was used the first time around, if users get the fulfillment errors they can simply (a) Deauthorize and (b) Re-Authorize (using anything they choose) and (C) Re-download their title from their bookshelf.

I have posted these updated articles on the What's Simmering article -- https://infosoup.info/ws/feb-10-2016/overdrive-update-ipadiphone-updated-0. Please refer patrons to the help articles. If patrons continue to have problems, let them know that OverDrive is working on updating the App as soon as possible. Note that, per the FAQ, the users OverDrive Reading History is lost forever upon updating the App. I will let you know as soon as I hear more from OverDrive. Thanks,

Evan

OverDrive App problem for iPad/iPhone

I don't have a lot of clear information, but there are reports of numerous issues with the latest OverDrive app (3.5.0) for iPad/iPhone users. The 3.5.0 version was released, I believe, on February 2. On February 5, OverDrive released an update 3.5.1. It is unclear if the latest release has fixed all, or just some of the problems. Until we here more, I have put a note on InfoSoup recommending that OverDrive users do not download the latest OverDrive app for Apple products. Users who have downloaded the 3.5.0 version, should update to 3.5.1.

Issues with the latest app included losing titles in your library, being unable to download checked out titles, and losing all your history. For some users, uninstalling, and then reinstalling the app has resolved some of the problems. I hope to hear more from OverDrive or WiLS soon. If patrons call regarding this issue, have them check the app version. To check your App version, open the app, go to the menu (tap menu icon or swipe right) and tap "About." If the version is 3.5.0, suggest that they update to 3.5.1. If they are on the latest version and still having problems, please take down their name, email address and library card number and let them know that we will contact them as soon as we have an update from OverDrive. Thanks,

Evan

Wording of Email Overdue Notices

At the last AAC meeting we agreed that we would change the wording of the Overdue Notices from:

The following item(s) are overdue. Please return them promptly.
If you have questions, please contact the library above, or contact
the library where you borrowed the items.

Items may be returned at any OWLSnet library. For a list, see the
Library Directory under the My Library menu at http://www.infosoup.org

to

The following item(s) are overdue. Please return them promptly.
If you have questions, please contact your library.

It may be possible to renew online at: http://search.infosoup.org/iii/encore/myaccount

I am waiting to make this change until after the Encore 4.5 update, currently postponed. This update will make changes to the Encore Mobile Login. After the update I will have a better understanding what, if any, accommodations need to be made to provide a login link that works for both mobile and desktop users. If it does not look like this update will happen soon, I will investigate other options so that we can make this change.

Encore 4.5 upgrade Postponed

Innovative support has informed me that a significant bug has just been identified in the Encore 4.5 release. Our planned upgrade on Monday (Feb. 8) will be postponed until this issue is resolved. I will reschedule once I hear from Innovative that they have fixed the problem.

Encore 4.5 Upgrade

If all goes well with the Sierra 2.1 upgrade tomorrow, we hope to follow that with an Encore upgrade on Monday, February 8th. The upgrade will take place at 7:30 am and should take less than 30 minutes to complete. If all goes well, the Encore server should only be down for a short time and be back up by 8:00 am. The Encore update will will not affect the Sierra server, so all Sierra activity can take place as normal.

The Encore upgrade will provide a better patron account view in Encore mobile, will add a genre facet to the Refine by section, and, so I have been told, fix the issue that has kept us from being able to link to the Digital Public Library of America in the Articles search.

Sierra 2.1 Upgrade Reminder

Just a reminder that we are planning to run the Sierra 2.1 software upgrade tomorrow (Tuesday, February 2) beginning around 7:00 am. The process is suppose to take around 45 minutes to an hour. We will send out a message when it is OK to login to Sierra. The upgrade will require new jar files to be downloaded, so we ask that you open Sierra one computer at a time and let the new files download before opening another Sierra session. As always, please contact OWLSnet Help owlsnethelp@mail.owls.lib.wi.us if you have any questions or encounter any problems. Thanks,

Instructions for printer setup can be found here: https://owlsnet.org/sites/default/files/owlsnet/SierraPrinterSetup.pdf

If you run into any problems after the upgrade, please email owlsnethelp@mail.owls.lib.wi.us

Patron Account Expiring Pop-up Alert

At the last AAC meeting it was agreed that we should turn on the "Patron Account Will be Expiring Soon" pop-up alert in Sierra and that it should be set to display up to 30 days prior to the account expiration date. Our plans are to turn this on Monday, January 25th. Please let all circulation staff be aware of this change. Once turned on, the expiration date in Sierra will also change color 30 days before expiration, rather than after expiration.

If you were not at the AAC meeting, here is a screen shot of what you will see when checking out a patron whose card will expire within 30 days: https://owlsnet.org/sites/default/files/owlsnet/expiring2.gif

Please let us know if you have any questions.
